A former Randolph High School volleyball coach hired to lead Cedar Creek's volleyball program in Bastrop Independent School District will no longer join the district after being arrested on a felony charge alleging an improper relationship with a student.
BreAnn Halcumb, 34, was fired from her new position after Bastrop school district officials learned information that had not been disclosed during the hiring process, according to a June 4 letter from Superintendent Kristi Lee obtained by KSAT.
District says it followed hiring procedures
In the letter, Lee told parents and staff that district administrators reviewed the matter immediately after learning about the charge and determined Halcumb would not be joining Bastrop ISD. Lee said the district had followed established hiring procedures, including conducting a background check and contacting references from her previous school.
The information that prompted the firing surfaced only after the hiring process had concluded, she wrote.
“Earlier this week the district became aware of information that had not been disclosed during the selection process. Upon learning this information, district administration immediately reviewed the matter and took appropriate action,” Lee wrote. “As a result, the individual (Halcumb) will not be joining Bastrop ISD.”
Investigation outlines illicit text messages, sexual encounters
The criminal investigation began after Randolph High School administrators reported concerns to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office in late May. According to the arrest warrant, school staff observed Halcumb and a student spending excessive time together, describing them as "hip-to-hip." Investigators found the two exchanged more than 160 text messages between February and April. The messages allegedly contained flirtatious material that violated school policy.
Court records allege the relationship turned physical in May while the student was 18 years old and still enrolled at Randolph High School. The student reported kissing and other sexual contact with Halcumb on multiple occasions.
Texas law prohibits educators from engaging in romantic or sexual relationships with students enrolled at the school where they work, regardless of the student's age.
Randolph Field ISD said Halcumb had resigned before the end of the 2025-26 school year and was no longer employed by the district.
