While some aspects of current U.S. politics may be unsettling to some this year, the Fourth of July stays consistent. This Friday, people are likely to see more fireworks and American flags than on any other day of the year.
There's more to patriotism than just sparklers and flags, of course. There are many factors that can contribute to the sense of love for one's country. In a recent study, WalletHub sought to determine how patriotism differs from state to state, using 13 key indicators.
"The most patriotic states have a lot of residents who serve or have served in the armed forces, high voter turnouts during elections, and a high share of the population volunteering with national or local organizations," WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said. "Patriotism also isn’t concentrated in any one particular area — the top states are located in vastly different geographic regions."
From military enlistees and veterans to the share of adults who voted in the 2024 presidential election and the number of AmeriCorps volunteers per capita, WalletHub compiled a range of data to compare patriotism across U.S. states. And depending on your political views, Texas' ranking may surprise you.
Texas is No. 45 most patriotic state, study claims
Unfortunately, the Lone Star State received a low score in WalletHub's patriotism analysis. It ranked as the sixth-least patriotic state in the country, only ranking above Arkansas, New York, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida.
Texas' fourth-lowest overall ranking was heavily influenced by poor civic engagement. The state had the second-lowest share of adults who voted in the 2024 presidential election, only outperforming Arkansas.
Unlike many of the low-ranking states, however, Texas performed fairly well in military engagement, ranking No. 13 overall. It had the third-highest average number of military enlistees, only behind Georgia and Alaska.
In the country as a whole, the study showed politically blue (Democratic) states on average ranked higher (21.21) than politically red (Republican) states (28.13).
