State Sen. Angela Paxton on Thursday filed for divorce from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, court records show.

The McKinney Republican cited “recent discoveries” and “biblical grounds” in a statement on the social media site X.

“I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation,” she wrote. “But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage.”

The couple has been married for 38 years and have four adult children. The news comes as Ken Paxton is running for U.S. Senate in next spring’s GOP primary against incumbent John Cornyn.

The divorce filing accuses Paxton of adultery and noted the couple stopped living together in June 2024, according to KUT, which first reported the divorce. It said the marriage had become “insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities,” which prevented “any reasonable expectation of reconciliation," KUT reported.

Ken Paxton, a hardline conservative who has made a name for himself by suing the Biden administration and trying to help overturn the 2020 election, has held his position as state’s top lawyer since 2015. Before that, he was a state lawmaker for over a decade. He issued a statement on X about the divorce about 20 minutes after his wife.

"After facing the pressures of countless political attacks and public scrutiny, Angela and I have decided to start a new chapter in our lives," he wrote. "I could not be any more proud or grateful for the incredible family that God has blessed us with, and I remain committed to supporting our amazing children and grandchildren. I ask for your prayers and privacy at this time."

A former school teacher and counselor of 20 years, Angela Paxton made her entrance into Texas politics in 2018 when she was elected to the state Senate. Her office did not respond to a request for comment Thursday, nor to a question about whether she would make an endorsement in Paxton’s Senate race.

The attorney general’s alleged infidelity was a major topic of discussion during his 2023 impeachment. Paxton had been accused of abusing the power of his office to help a friend, who in exchange donated to Paxton’s campaign and gave a job to a woman with whom Paxton allegedly had an affair. Angela Paxton was recused from voting in his Senate trial but present for the proceedings; the attorney general was later acquitted by the chamber in which his wife sits.

“I move forward with complete confidence that God is always working everything together for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose,” Angela Paxton said in her statement.
