Austin City Council members criticized public safety officials for delays in a plan to consolidate emergency communications, warning that it leaves some residents with less reliable 911 services. The plan aims to integrate 911 call-taking and dispatch functions into one centralized department. Council Member Krista Laine said the presentation was delivered months late and fell far short of what City Council requested. A 2021 study identified inefficiencies in the city's emergency communications system. Laine hoped to receive an update on the feasibility of the consolidation, a cost analysis and an implementation timeline before City Council adopts next year's budget in August. Assistant City Manager Ramón Batista acknowledged council members' frustrations and said he would provide more information after speaking with the consultant hired to study the project.
