Ahead of next week’s SEC showdown in Athens, the Longhorns and the Bulldogs are out for blood — literally.

The University of Texas at Austin is entering the final stretch of a weeklong blood donation competition against the University of Georgia, a rivalry event timed ahead of the schools' Nov. 15 football matchup.

The “Blood Bowl” was organized by local blood bank We Are Blood in partnership with UT’s Sorority and Fraternity Life office and UGA’s Greek Life office. The competition encourages students, faculty and staff to donate blood as a show of school spirit — in Austin, the event supports more than 50 Central Texas hospitals.

The contest began on Monday, Nov. 3 and ends Friday, Nov. 7.

Thursday, Nov. 6 is the final day to donate blood on campus at the Texas Union. The drive on Thursday will run from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Quadrangle Room. After that, participants can continue to contribute at We Are Blood’s North Lamar donor center at 4300 N. Lamar Blvd. Appointments are required.

Current standings are still unknown, but the winning school will be announced once final donations are counted.

UT has never participated in the Blood Bowl, but this is at least the third time UGA has participated.
