Peter Frechette holds you rapt as an actor, a teacher and an ally

Even when he shares the stage with other magnetic performers, queer ally and veteran actor Peter Frechette demands your attention. The out queer thespian, known for their compelling portrayals of complex characters, is currently dazzling audiences in Austin, Texas, with their tour-de-force performance in "The Lehman Trilogy" at the Zach Theatre.

Frechette, who uses they/them pronouns, embodies not only business co-founder Henry Lehman but also over two dozen other characters in a narrative that spans three centuries and concludes with the 2008 financial crisis. The play, written by Ben Power and based on Stefano Massini's nine-hour poem, offers a critical examination of the rise and fall of the Lehman brothers' financial empire, exploring themes of capitalism, greed, and the human cost of economic disparity.

The actor, who gained recognition for their powerful performances in Broadway plays, movies, and television, has garnered multiple Tony and Emmy Award nominations. However, it is their commitment to using their platform for progressive causes that truly sets them apart. Frechette has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, using their art to challenge heteronormativity and cisnormativity.

"All acting is about solving problems," Frechette says. "And this play is a giant organism. My fellow actors and I, alongside our brilliant director Dave Steakley, work together to unravel and solve the intricate tapestry of this story, doing justice to its themes and characters."

Frechette's journey to becoming a renowned actor began in the theater department at the University of Rhode Island during the 1970s, an era characterized by a roll-up-your-sleeves-and-live-in-the-moment mentality. This formative experience shaped Frechette's approach to their craft, fostering an aversion to commodification, branding, and the pursuit of perfection. Instead, they focus on truthful performances that radiate intimacy and energy, creating a palpable connection with the audience.

In addition to their illustrious acting career, Frechette has found fulfillment in teaching. Based in Atlanta, they dedicate their time to mentoring the next generation of performers, passing on their wisdom and instilling a love for the craft. It is this pedagogical prowess that first brought Frechette to Director Steakley's attention during a play reading in Austin produced by the New York-based Tectonic Theater Company.

"The Lehman Trilogy" presents a sweeping narrative that spans generations," Steakley writes. "It moved me with its theatrical storytelling that followed the fortunes of this singular immigrant family, much like a binge-worthy series that leaves you deeply engrossed and yearning for more."

The play interrogates the complicated moral world of outsiders, including the titular Lehman brothers, exploring their status as immigrants and Jews navigating a society rife with systemic oppression and prejudice. These themes, so pertinent to our current socio-political climate, are given life by Frechette, who brings a nuanced humanity to their portrayal of Henry Lehman, depicting him as a quiet storm of eccentricity and emotion.

As Frechette continues to captivate audiences and advocate for progressive causes, they embody the intersection of artistry and activism. Their commitment to challenging normative standards both on and off the stage serves as a beacon for a more equitable future. Catch Frechette in "The Lehman Trilogy" at the Zach Theatre until July 7th and be prepared for an evening of unparalleled storytelling.
