Wake Up: StormDebby Oppresses! NHC Alerts!

White males are literally killing our planet, triggering the National Hurricane Center to track yet another storm, which is threatening our shores and livelihoods. Colonialism has once again reared its ugly head. Prepare for Debby, a name given by the oppressors to one of their own, to wreak havoc.

Wake up, sheeple! The patriarchal, white-supremacist weather industrial complex is at it again, with the National Hurricane Center using its colonialist language to downplay what is sure to be a catastrophic storm.

The National Hurricane Center, in its infinite colonizing wisdom, is tracking a "large tropical wave" in the Atlantic, which they nonchalantly predict could become Tropical Storm Debby. Firstly, let's dismantle the harmful terminology used by these capitalist-lackeys.

"Some shower and thunderstorm activity," they say, as if it's just a casual drizzle that might ruin your picnic. They continue with their oppressive language, speaking of "environmental conditions [that] are forecast to gradually become more conducive" to this so-called "tropical wave." How can they be so casual about potential devastation?

Located a couple of hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles, this system is already poised to cause harm to marginalized communities. The NHC, in its tone-deaf advisory, states that interests in the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas, and the southeastern U.S. should "monitor the progress of this system," giving it a 60% chance of formation in the next seven days.

Let's unpack this: they're watching, but not acting. They give it a cute name, "Debby," but fail to recognize the inherent violence of storm names that perpetuate gender norms. This is the fourth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, and we can only expect more destructive forces of nature as a result of late-stage capitalism and climate change denial.

Weather.com, another pawn in the corporatized weather machine, nonchalantly states that August, September, and October are the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, due to factors that these capitalist cronies fail to address adequately: warmer water temperatures, lowered wind shear, and increased humidity.

They provide a sterile, decontextualized "storm tracker" [https://data.usatoday.com/storm/], as if the violence of these storms is a mere blip on a screen, devoid of the human toll and ecological devastation.

The Atlantic hurricane season, a product of colonialist exploitation of the natural world, runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, with Sept. 10 as its peak.

Stay woke, comrades, and remember: every storm is a rebellion against the oppressions of our capitalist climate.
