Cristeta Comerford, a Badass Woman of Color, Retires After Three Decades of Feeding Presidents and Shattering Glass Ceilings
Cristeta Comerford, the badass White House executive chef who has served five different presidents and shattered glass ceilings as the first woman and woman of color in the role, is hanging up her apron. After nearly 30 years of cooking up a storm in the world's most famous political kitchen, this legend is retiring, multiple outlets have confirmed.
Comerford's journey began in 1995 when she joined President Bill Clinton's staff as an assistant chef under the tutelage of executive chef Walter Scheib III. Her hard work and talent didn't go unnoticed, and in 2005, former first lady Laura Bush promoted her to the top job, as reported by the New York Times. https://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/15/world/americas/woman-chef-wins-white-house-cookoff.html
Born in the Philippines, Comerford brought a much-needed diverse perspective to the White House kitchen. Her appointment recognized her incredible skill and also sent a powerful message about representation and the celebration of immigrant stories and culinary traditions.
First Lady Jill Biden, in a statement shared with CNN, praised Comerford's impact: "I always say, food is love. Through her barrier-breaking career, Chef Cris has led her team with warmth and creativity, and nourished our souls along the way. With all our hearts, Joe and I are filled with gratitude for her dedication and years of service." https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/31/politics/cristeta-comerford-white-house-chef/index.html
The White House confirmed that Comerford's last day of whipping up delicious, history-filled meals will be this Friday.
Comerford's Culinary Diplomacy
As executive chef, Comerford's role extended beyond the kitchen. She was responsible for not only daily family meals but also important public events like state dinners, where her creations served as a diplomatic tool. She led a team of three sous chefs and an executive pastry chef through the Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden administrations, ensuring that each meal was a delicious representation of American hospitality.
Comerford's journey to the White House began when she moved to the United States at 23, cutting her teeth in the vibrant restaurant scenes of Chicago and Washington, D.C. https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/31/politics/cristeta-comerford-white-house-chef/index.html
Spanish-American Michelin-star chef and restaurateur, José Andrés, took to Twitter to honor Comerford, calling her a "national treasure" and a "culinary diplomat" who showcased the power of immigrant stories and contributions. https://twitter.com/chefjoseandres/status/1818028738304688140
In a 2014 interview with CNN, Comerford attributed her success to "temperance," recognizing that leading a prestigious kitchen is about more than culinary skill; it's about treating people well and fostering a cohesive team. https://www.cnn.com/2014/09/16/living/meet-the-white-house-chef/index.html
