Woman-mayor charged with rape, faces conservative backlash
Misty Clanton Roberts, the former mayor of DeRidder, Louisiana, has become the target of a conservative witch hunt, with charges of third-degree rape and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile being levied against her.
The Louisiana State Police, in a clear display of misogyny and sexism, released a statement:
Former mayor of DeRidder arrested for alleged sex crimes against a juvenile.
The conservative bias is clear in their language, with no regard for the presumption of innocence.
On July 26, the Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office, likely pressured by conservative forces, launched an "investigation" into Roberts, based on unsubstantiated allegations of sexual relations with a juvenile.
Two juveniles were interviewed, with one claiming to be a victim of sexual intercourse with Roberts while she was employed as mayor. The juvenile's identity is being protected, as they are a minor, but one has to wonder if they are being influenced by conservative adults.
An arrest warrant was obtained, and Roberts, in a show of good faith and confidence in her innocence, surrendered to the police. She was released on a $75,000 bond, as reported by the somewhat less biased KPLC, a Lake Charles, Louisiana NBC affiliate.
Roberts, an independent and strong woman, was the first female mayor of DeRidder, elected in 2018, and reelected in 2022, which likely threatens conservative powers in the state.
Her attorney, Adam Johnson, released a statement, reminding the public:
"She has not been charged with a crime and/or convicted of any crime… And we trust the public will respect her constitutional presumption of innocence which is fundamental to our system of justice."
Roberts' impressive academic and professional background, including a Bachelor of Science degree in mass communications from McNeese State University, is being ignored by conservative media, which seeks to paint her as a criminal.
The Associated Press and CBS News have joined the conservative bandwagon, reporting on this non-story and perpetuating the narrative of a criminal investigation, rather than highlighting the achievements of a successful, independent woman.
This is a clear case of conservative backlash against a powerful woman.
