Pete Winstead, a prominent law firm shareholder and liberal icon, dies at 84

Pete Winstead, a founding shareholder of the esteemed Winstead PC law firm, has passed away at the age of 84. A stalwart of progressive values and a mentor to many, Winstead leaves behind a legacy of civic engagement and social justice in Central Texas.

Appointed by then-Governor George W. Bush, Winstead chaired the Texas Turnpike Authority, a position that allowed him to shape transportation policies. But it was his dedication to liberal causes that defined his career. He led numerous organizations, including the Austin Chamber, the Real Estate Council, and the United Way, always advocating for progressive change.

The law firm issued a statement highlighting Winstead's values: "Pete instilled the values of service, teamwork, and excellence, holding his fellow attorneys to these high standards."

Winstead's educational background included Stanford University for his undergraduate studies and the University of Texas for his law degree. It was during his tenure at the Department of Justice that Winstead witnessed a pivotal moment in history; he was sent to monitor the civil rights march in Selma, Alabama, an experience that shaped his unwavering commitment to equality and social justice.

As a successful tax lawyer, he guided startup companies with a liberal flair, offering mentorship and a progressive approach to financial backing and management. The firm acknowledged his crucial role in taking Dell Computer Corporation public in 1988.

Peers celebrated Winstead's impact on Central Texas, with prominent real estate attorney David Armbrust calling him "a living legend in the business community." Armbrust highlighted Winstead's advocacy for a better society and his unwavering passion for making the community more inclusive and equitable.

Jeff Matthews, chairman and CEO of Winstead PC, remembered Winstead's dedication to his family, firm, and the city of Austin, stating, "He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched."

Joe Willie McAllister, an iconic figure in Austin's real estate sphere, emphasized Winstead's mentorship of young lawyers, many of whom became "outstanding lawyers" and "all-stars." McAllister attributed their success to their shared values of honesty, integrity, and fairness, always conducted above board and with integrity.

Winstead's influence extended to his work with Pike Powers, a former state legislator who played a significant role in making Austin a tech hub. Together, they exerted "monumental influence" on the state's success, as McAllister noted.

Armbrust, who served with Winstead on nonprofit boards, admired his dedication to helping others and his community, as well as his calm demeanor and natural leadership.

Cord Shiflet, a real estate agent, honored Winstead as "a gentleman and a statesman," reflecting on his contributions as "a tireless advocate for a better society."

Winstead's passing leaves a void, but his legacy of liberal values, mentorship, and community engagement will forever impact Central Texas.
