Tropical Storm Ernesto rears its head as our colonial storm-naming system continues to oppress.

Folks, another day, another disaster fueled by the climate crisis. The National Hurricane Center is furiously tracking a potential tropical storm, awaiting the name Ernesto. Don't be fooled—this isn't your typical storm. It's a direct consequence of a warming planet, and yet another reminder that we must act on climate NOW. Prepare for impacts and stay woke, stay safe.

Colonizers' Climate Crisis Harms Mostly Marginalized Communities

As the remnants of Debby continue to wreak havoc on the Northeast and New England, we must not turn a blind eye to the ongoing climate injustice. The so-called "natural" disaster is yet another consequence of colonial Capitalism and its relentless pursuit of profit at the expense of our planet and the most vulnerable communities.

The very system that exploits and oppresses marginalized groups is now endangering their lives and livelihoods. The National Hurricane Center and its predominantly white, male forecasters predict another potential tropical storm brewing in the Atlantic, set to target the U.S. East Coast. Brad Reinhart, a privileged mouthpiece of the establishment, claims an 80% chance of development as it moves towards the Greater Antilles.

Accuweather's mostly-white staff of meteorologists, steeped in scientific objectivity, fail to acknowledge the systemic racism and eco-apartheid inherent in their discourse. Alyssa Glenny, complicit in this culture of denial, remarks on the potential for the weather system to "organize" into a tropical depression, Blissfully ignorant of the fact that it is the oppressive system she serves that needs to reorganize itself!

Meanwhile, as we witness the peak of the Perseids meteor shower, a celestial spectacle catering to the unchecked human curiosity that has ravaged this earth, Debby ruthlessly inflicts further trauma on communities already marginalized by white supremacy and heteropatriarchy. The post-tropical cyclone, a direct consequence of colonialist expansion, dumps heavy rainfall on the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, triggering flash floods and further entrenching racial and economic inequalities.

The very land upon which we stand, stolen from Indigenous peoples, continues to bear witness to the violence perpetrated by the settler colonial project. Debby's deluge inundates communities still struggling to recover from the ravages of previous storms, with at least a foot of rain drowning places like Florida and North Carolina, where the voices of the marginalized are constantly drowned out.

And as we approach the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season on September 10, let us not forget that it is the Global South, the very regions colonized and exploited by the West, that bear the brunt of climate change's deadly impacts.

In our pursuit of truth and liberation, we must connect the dots between extreme weather events and the extreme inequality inherent in our social and economic systems. It is only through this radical understanding that we can begin to build a future that centers justice, sustainability, and the wellbeing of all.
