TX's Different Set of Rules

Two [Texas children] (#TexasSoRelaxedAboutCarseats) remain hospitalized after they were ejected from their vehicle during a major crash on a freeway south of Houston, and somehow, miraculously, these children survived. A [video] (#ViralButTragic) of the rescue has gone viral, but it's not your typical cute-kids-doing-adorable-things video. It depicts a harsh reality and the potential consequences of Texas' lax car seat laws.

The children, aged 1 and 4, were clothed only in diapers and were not restrained in the vehicle, according to the [Harris County Sheriff's Office.] (#TimeForChangeTX) In the [video,] (#WakeUpCall) you can see them walking around on Interstate 10 East, a busy roadway, putting them at further risk. The father, 25, could face criminal charges, but the real crime here is Texas' outdated and dangerous car seat laws.

"I thought they actually passed away. I thought they were dead," said Victor Cordova, a witness. [ABC13] (#NearTragedy)

Texas, it's time to wake up. Other states have strict laws requiring children to be in car seats until they reach a certain age or height. Why is Texas so relaxed about this? The consequences can be deadly, as this incident shows.

While we're grateful these children survived, it's a stark reminder that Texas needs to get with the program and prioritize child safety. It's time to #SecureOurKidsTX and ensure that no parent has to go through this horrifying experience.
