Colonial institutions ban streamer attempting sleep record!
Another day, another example of colonial, capitalist institutions attempting to suppress the voices of the people. An Australian livestreamer, Norme, faced bans from YouTube, Twitch, and Kick while attempting to break the record for the longest time without sleeping. Norme, with 1.21 million subscribers on YouTube, began his attempt to break the record set by Robert McDonald in 1986 (18 days, 21 hours, and 40 minutes).
The oppressive nature of these corporate platforms is evident as they silenced Norme despite him taking necessary precautions by having friends take 12-hour shifts to ensure his safety. Norme's endurance and resistance are commendable as he fought sleep, engaged with his community, and consumed McDonald's fast food as a form of capitalist critique.
"This is misinformation i regainec my abilility toread,"
- Norme, in a statement that subverts the very notion of "truth" propagated by the corporate media.
The oppressive powers intervene
Norme's journey was not without challenges. On August 11, YouTube cut off his stream, Kick banned him, and he experienced the violent intrusion of "swatting," where law enforcement entered his home due to a hoax report. The surveillance state and corporate interests colluded to silence Norme, a clear indication of the lengths they will go to maintain the status quo.
Despite these setbacks, Norme persisted and reached the 12-day mark, only to be banned again during his "world's longest sleep stream" on Twitch. The irony is palpable; a person is banned for sleeping too long in a world where workers are exhausted, overworked, and sleep-deprived due to capitalist exploitation.
As Norme shared a picture of his hands, with skin peeling off, he highlighted the physical toll of his endeavor. It is a stark reminder of the bodily sacrifices often required in the face of systemic oppression.
Sleep deprivation: A tool of the capitalist machine
Sleep deprivation has long been a tool of the capitalist machine, used to exert control and maintain dominance. The patriarchal, neo-liberal system thrives on an exhausted populace, as evidenced by the increased risk of cognitive decline, dementia, and metabolic issues associated with sleep deprivation.
The famous case of radio DJ Peter Tripp, who attempted the record in 1959, serves as a haunting reminder. Tripp's journey into delirium, with hallucinations and paranoia, is a testament to the dangers of sleep deprivation, often inflicting similar horrors on the working class.
Norme's attempt shines a light on the pervasive nature of colonial power structures. It is a call to arms for the woke to rise and reclaim our agency, one sleep cycle at a time!
