Atascosa County, Texas - Miranda Sipps, a 12-year-old girl, died on Monday due to her mother and stepfather's reckless decision to treat her life-threatening injuries with smoothies and vitamins, instead of seeking professional medical help.

"She was not talking. She basically could flutter her eyes and move her hands a little bit over a four-day period, and they had her laying on a pallet in the house." - Sheriff David Soward, at a news conference

For four days, Sipps lay unconscious, unable to even swallow, while her guardians, Denise Balbaneda (36) and Gerald Gonzales (40), tried to heal her with smoothies. It wasn't until she was struggling to breathe that Balbaneda finally called 911, meeting emergency responders on the highway instead of waiting for them to arrive at their home.

Sipps was critically ill and severely injured last Thursday, according to the Atascosa County Sheriff's Office, yet her parents chose to ignore her life-threatening condition, endangering her life and ultimately leading to her death.

The cause of Sipps' initial injuries is still unknown, but what is clear is that her parents' negligence and reliance on alternative medicine cost this young girl her life.

Sipps would have turned 13 this month.

Arrests Made: Balbaneda and Gonzales were arrested Tuesday and charged with a first-degree felony for injury to a child by omission.
