Megachurch Meltdown: Texas' Gateway Church Loses Another Pastor to 'Moral Failure'
In a shockingly unsurprising turn of events, yet another high-ranking member of the Texas megachurch, Gateway, has stepped down, making him the fourth leader to bite the dust in just two months. Because when it rains, it pours — and when it's a scandal, it's a downpour.
The Dallas church gave executive pastor Kemtal Glasgow the boot over an unspecified "moral issue" that "disqualifies him from serving," elder Tra Willbanks announced in a statement on the church's YouTube page. Willbanks, playing the role of the good cop, assured everyone that they "love his family" and want to "come alongside them during this difficult time and help them find restoration and healing that they need as a family." Awww, how sweet.
In June, Gateway senior pastor Robert Morris stepped down after admitting to "inappropriate sexual behavior" with a 12-year-old girl 35 years ago. Morris, then 21 and married, apparently thought it was a swell idea to engage in what he later described as "kissing and petting." Because who needs boundaries when you're a man of God, right?
Morris' son, James Morris, and his wife, Bridgette Morris, both stepped down from their roles in the church shortly after, because apparently, scandal runs in the family.
Glasgow's Dismissal: Totally Not Related to Morris' Departure (Wink, Wink)
Glasgow's information has been scrubbed clean from Gateway's website, but according to an archive biography page, he was the head honcho of leadership and oversight at all of the church's campuses. Talk about a fall from grace.
In a statement to CBS News Texas, Gateway said, "it's our deepest desire for every staff member to lead a life of integrity, both in their personal and professional lives." Sure, Jan.
"It recently came to light that Kemtal Glasgow had a moral failure so we've asked him to step down as a pastor at Gateway and devote time to his marriage and family," the megachurch continued. "Although his employment is ending, we are devoted to still caring for Kemtal and his family."
Gateway insisted that Glasgow's departure "had nothing to with the departure of Robert Morris nor related to those circumstances." Yeah, and I've got a bridge to sell you.
The Morris Family: Scandal edition
Glasgow's firing comes nearly a month after Robert Morris' son, James Morris, resigned during a "temporary leave of absence." Gateway recommended the leave on June 28, likely hoping the scandal would blow over.
"Pastor James Morris is a man of integrity, and he had no knowledge of the true facts of this situation," the church wrote in a Facebook post, referencing the allegations against his father. Because ignorance is bliss, right?
The Allegations Against Robert Morris
Robert Morris resigned in June, four days after 54-year-old Cindy Clemishire accused him of sexually abusing her when she was 12. Clemishire first shared her story with The Wartburg Watch, a blog about sexual abuse within the church.
Clemishire told USA TODAY that she'd been sharing her story for decades, but no one removed Morris from ministry. She decided to come forward publicly to encourage other potential victims to tell their stories.
"I've always just trusted that God's timing would take it wherever it needed to go," she said about Morris. "Why hide?"
In a statement at the time, Morris downplayed the allegations, saying "it was kissing and petting and not intercourse." How noble of him to draw the line somewhere.
"It was wrong," he continued. "This behavior happened on several occasions over the next few years ... Since that time, I have walked in purity and accountability in this area." Good for you, buddy. Now walk yourself right out of here.
