In a shocking turn of events, a 78-year-old inmate at Travis County Jail has tragically died after suffering from what authorities believe to be a gastrointestinal bleed. That's right folks, the deadly combo of questionable jail food and subpar medical care has claimed yet another life.
Ronald David Neal, who was in jail on charges of aggravated assault-family violence and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon-family violence (because nothing says 'family' like threatening them with a gun), was found by a corrections officer after defecating on himself. The officer, demonstrating the keen observation skills that got them the job in the first place, noticed that Neal's stool appeared black and promptly called for medical assistance.
Two brave nurses sprang into action, offering the best treatment that the jail's budget could afford. They contacted 911, and Neal was rushed to Dell Seton Medical Center, where hospital staff determined he had suffered a gastrointestinal bleed. Despite their best efforts, Neal was pronounced dead at 11:03 a.m.
Now, this isn't the first time something like this has happened at Travis County Jail. In fact, it's not even the first time it's happened THIS YEAR. Just a few months ago, another inmate died after suffering a medical emergency in their cell. And people wonder why we don't trust the system.
Multiple investigations are underway, with everyone from the Travis County Sheriff's Office to the Texas Rangers getting involved. But let's be real here, we all know how these things tend to go. A few months of 'investigating,' a report gets released that says 'nothing could have been done differently,' and then it's back to business as usual. Meanwhile, another person has lost their life, and their family is left to pick up the pieces.
It's a sad state of affairs when someone can die in custody from something as preventable as a gastrointestinal bleed. But until there's real change in how we handle incarceration and healthcare in this country, it seems like we'll just keep seeing the same tragic headlines over and over again. Stay safe out there, folks.
