Athena the Owl Returns to her Nest at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Athena, a female great horned owl, is back at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for her 14th year of nesting.

She laid her first egg on March 1, and her second egg on March 5.

You can watch her 24/7 via a live cam on their website.

  • Where is she nesting?

Right above the entrance to the Courtyard, in a sotol planter in the north corner.

  • When will the eggs hatch?

Great horned owl eggs hatch after about 33 days. As Athena laid her eggs a few days apart, they will hatch at different times.

  • How many owlets last year?

In 2022, Athena laid two eggs, and both owlets successfully fledged.

  • What about the male owl?

The male partner, who remains unnamed, provides food for Athena while she incubates their eggs.

  • Fun Fact:

In 2015, Athena laid three eggs, the only time she's done so to date.
