Thousands of Austin Energy Customers Lose Power Due to Severe Storms

Severe storms cause power outages for thousands in Austin, with most outages concentrated in South, Central, and East Austin.

Severe storms on Sunday morning caused power outages for thousands of Austin Energy customers, with approximately 2,500 still without power as of 3 p.m. according to the Austin Energy outage map. This was a significant decrease from the earlier estimate of 18,000 customers affected. The outages were confirmed to be weather-related by Matt Mitchell, a spokesperson for Austin Energy.

"Crews are restoring power to the largest number of customers first and will work their way down the list," - Matt Mitchell, Austin Energy Spokesperson.

Oncor Energy and Pedernales Electrical Cooperative reported scattered outages impacting fewer than 100 customers each. Bluebonnet Electrical Cooperative restored power to several hundred customers in Bastrop County.

The storms brought less than an inch of rain to Austin, according to the National Weather Service, but the month's total rainfall will exceed 3 inches.
