Texas Votes May 4: What You Need to Know

May 4 election: prepare now.

It's #ElectionDay in Texas. Here's what to know:

When: May 4. Polls open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Find early voting dates here.

Where: Check your polling place:

What: Central Texas city/school district offices + propositions. Ballot breakdown by county.

How: TX law requires 1 of 7 forms of ID:

  • TX driver license
  • TX election ID
  • TX personal ID
  • TX handgun license
  • U.S. citizenship cert (with photo)
  • U.S. military ID
  • U.S. passport

If you can't provide ID, you can fill out a Reasonable Impediment Declaration and provide an alternative (utility bill, bank statement, etc).

Your rights as a voter:

  • Request a ballot with instructions, or ask for instructions from an official (not suggestions on how to vote).
  • Vote in secret, free from intimidation.
  • Receive up to 2 new ballots if you make a mistake.
  • Bring an interpreter if you don't understand English.
  • Get help if you can't write/see ballot/understand language.
  • Report voting rights abuse to the Secretary of State (1-800-252-8683) or local official.
  • Cast a provisional ballot if your name isn't on the registered voters list.
