Man Dies Saving Son at Utah's Willard Bay State Park
A 38-year-old man, Andre Leon Debose, drowned at Willard Bay State Park in Utah, while trying to save his 17-year-old son and another swimmer. The incident occurred during stormy weather on Saturday, as per a news release from the Utah Division of State Parks.
"The woman was wearing a life jacket and was able to be brought back aboard the boat safely," the news release stated, referring to the 19-year-old swimmer.
Debose's son then struggled to rebord, prompting his father to jump in and assist. They had only one life jacket, which they clung to. Sadly, Debose "went under the water and did not resurface," while his son made it back to safety. Search and rescue teams recovered Debose's body later that night.
"The Utah Division of State Parks extends our deepest condolences to Debose’s family and friends during this difficult time...[We thank] the agencies who assisted in the search and recovery efforts."
This is the second drowning at Willard Bay in a week, emphasizing the need for caution when outdoors. The park, 50 miles north of Salt Lake City, urges visitors to "recreate with a buddy, wear a life jacket, and remain aware of weather conditions."
