Former US Army Officer Charged with Capital Murder in Multi-County Rampage

A warrant filed in Bexar County, Texas, offers insight into the December 5th rampage that left six people dead. Shane James Jr., a former U.S. Army officer, now faces a capital murder charge in Bexar County and multiple charges in Travis County, including four counts of capital murder and two counts of attempted capital murder.

'Impending Doom'

According to the warrant, James' siblings stated that he suffered from schizophrenia, and his mental health declined after his discharge from the Army in 2015. James himself told deputies he felt an "impending doom" before the shootings. On the morning of December 5th, he was watching YouTube videos and putting up angry notes on the wall. After an exchange with his father, he retrieved his gun and killed both his parents, later dragging their bodies into the bathroom. He then stole his mother's car, money, and keys, as seen on a neighbor's surveillance footage.

Court Proceedings

James currently awaits trial in Travis County Jail, with his Bexar County charges pending. His lawyer, Russ Hunt Jr., said there have been no discussions of a plea deal or the death penalty. James is expected to appear in court for the first time in August, with the specific details of the case being worked out between the respective counties.
