Warrant reveals new details in case of Army veteran accused of killing 6 across two counties

A fatal multi-county shooting rampage on Dec. 5, 2022, has resulted in Shane James Jr., a former U.S. Army officer, facing multiple charges, including capital murder.

[Bexar County, TX - A recently unsealed warrant offers insights into James' mental state and the events leading up to the murders of his parents, Phyllis James, 55, and Shane James Sr., 56. According to the warrant, filed in Bexar County last month, James' siblings revealed that he suffered from schizophrenia, a condition that worsened after his discharge from the Army in 2015.

James told deputies that he felt an "impending doom" preceding the shootings. On the morning of Dec. 5, he was watching YouTube videos and angrily tacking notes to his wall. After asking his father a question and receiving a joke in response, James retrieved his gun and killed his parents, later dragging their bodies into the bathroom. He then stole his mother's car, money, and keys, as confirmed by neighbor surveillance.

He went to ask his father a question, and his father "made a joke." That is when James went to his room, grabbed his gun and killed both of his parents.

After his arrest, James "smirked" when police mentioned trying to contact his parents, per the charging document. In his room, deputies found notes, journals, and a laptop with unspecified contents. Despite the revelations, certain details are being withheld by law enforcement, such as the specific content of the notes and videos.

James now faces a total of seven charges in Travis County, including four capital murder charges, two attempted capital murder charges, and one count of aggravated assault. He is expected to appear in a Bexar County court in August, with formal charges pending. His lawyer, Russ Hunt Jr., states that there has been no discussion of a plea deal or the death penalty. Hunt also mentions that James has been focused on his faith and that a motive for the killings remains unclear.]( https://www.statesman.com/story/news/2023/06/16/shane-james-jrn-sand-hills-shooting-bexar-james-family-reaction/5377778002/)
