Queer Creating: 3 Alternative LGBTQ Groups in Austin

As Pride Month continues, Austin's LGBTQ community carves out spaces in cultural scenes where they previously felt excluded:

Queer Skate Austin

Founding member, Max Richardson, wanted to create a visible and safe space for queer people to skate. The group meets weekly at Mueller Skate Park, welcoming all ages, wheels, and identities. It's about "facing fears and trying again," says Richardson, a radical act of joy for the queer community.

Tiny Minotaur Tavern

Founded by Dana Bauerle-McKnight in 2020, Tiny Minotaur is an immersive art project and social club. Patrons step into a fantasy realm free of heteronormativity, where they can engage in role-playing, karaoke, and drag shows. While not exclusively LGBTQ, the space is openly queer-adjacent, with a code of conduct that ensures a safe and inclusive environment.

Queer Vinyl Collective

Born from a record swap in 2022, this group of queer DJs and vinyl enthusiasts is led by founder Dana Brown (DJ Dana Scully). The collective spins for various organizations and venues, bringing their unique styles and tastes, from the '80s to vaporwave. Their mission is to spread queer joy and build community, dreaming of taking their inclusive vibes worldwide.
