Suspicious package found at Perez Elementary School in Austin deemed harmless

A "suspicious package" found at Perez Elementary School in Southeast Austin, Texas, was determined to be harmless, according to a statement by Lt. Travis Pickford of the Austin Police Department.

"After careful analysis, the Austin Police Department's bomb squad determined that the item was not an explosive device and at no point was the campus ever in danger." - Lt. Travis Pickford

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, started around 11:45 a.m. and was resolved by 1:23 p.m. The school and the surrounding area were evacuated as a precaution, with about 30 children and 20 staff members from a summer camp program being moved away from the package and the building. No injuries or deaths were reported.

The Austin PD was aided by multiple agencies, including the Department of Public Safety, Austin Fire Department, and Austin-Travis County EMS. A staff member first noticed the package on the ground outside a school building, and authorities are urging anyone who sees suspicious packages or activity to report it.

No further details about the package were provided, and no questions were taken at the press conference.
