The National Hurricane Center is tracking two tropical disturbances that may escalate into tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico within the week.

Gulf of Mexico Disturbance:

  • National Hurricane Center (NHC) latest: Potential for system development in the western Gulf of Mexico.
  • A tropical depression may form early to mid-next week.

Invest 90L:

  • Brought heavy rain to South and Southwest Florida.
  • Moving to Florida's east coast, may enter the Atlantic and become the first named storm, Alberto.

La Niña Impact:

  • La Niña cools the equatorial Pacific, part of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation.
  • Can contribute to an active Atlantic hurricane season.
  • NOAA predicts 17-25 named storms, 4-7 major hurricanes this season.

2024 Hurricane Season:

  • Runs June 1 - Nov. 30, peaking mid-September.
  • No hurricanes in the US so far.
