Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Declares State of Emergency in Five Counties Due to Flooding

Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade, and Sarasota counties are under a state of emergency due to heavy rainfall and flooding, according to a memorandum posted on the Florida Government's website.

  • "This memorandum states that a broad area of low pressure moved across Florida, bringing severe weather and 10 to 15 inches of rain, causing consequential flooding in South Florida."
  • "The rainfall and flooding could impact critical infrastructure, including interstates, airports, and schools, in the affected counties."

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava declared a local state of emergency, encouraging residents to stay inside, and reducing staff in administrative buildings.

Impact of the Flooding:

  • Airport Delays and Cancellations: Miami International Airport (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) posted about delays and cancellations, advising travelers to check with airlines and avoid driving through flooded areas.
  • Stranded Vehicles: A video posted on X showed cars at a standstill north of Miami, with water covering their tires. Users cautioned against starting vehicles in flooded conditions, and some called this the worst flooding they had seen in Miami.
  • Other Affected Areas: Flooding also impacted Naples, Sarasota, and Marco Island.
