Poppi: healthy alternative or fad?

Nutritionists claim Poppi and rival prebiotic sodas offer health benefits but no concrete evidence supports these assertions.

Dietitians agree that prebiotic sodas are a healthier alternative to traditional soft drinks, but question their effects on gut health. Jessica Alfano, a clinical dietitian, says that common sodas are "calorically dense" and full of "added sugar," whereas prebiotic sodas are a "healthier alternative." However, she notes that these colorful canned drinks may not provide significant gut-healing benefits.

"It's definitely not a product that's going to cure gut health just from drinking one or two cans a day," - Jessica Alfano, Clinical Dietitian.

A recent class action lawsuit against Poppi soda underscores this concern, as it alleges misleading marketing regarding prebiotic content.

Prebiotic vs. Probiotic:

Bonnie Taub-Dix, a registered dietitian, explains probiotics fuel good bacteria, while prebiotics are food for these bacteria. Mayo Clinic and Healthline affirm that probiotics are beneficial bacteria, essential for gut health. Harvard Health describes postbiotics as byproducts of pre and probiotic digestion. Alfano warns that gut health issues like IBS are linked to poor gut bacteria, so a balance of all three is crucial.

Soda Sensationalism:

The lawsuit against Poppi highlights the need for transparency in labeling. Alfano advises consumers to be cautious of overly promising claims, acknowledging that getting prebiotics from foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, or fruits and vegetables is preferable to soda. She recommends kombucha and smoothies as liquid options, noting their potential for high sugar content.

"We want a variety of different foods in our diet...Eat the rainbow." - Jessica Alfano, Clinical Dietitian.

The Final Verdict:

Prebiotic sodas offer a healthier fizz, but their true benefits remain uncertain. Alfano states that the medical world lacks definitive research on optimal pre and probiotic intake. Taub-Dix cautions that some individuals may be sensitive to specific prebiotics, experiencing gastrointestinal issues. While companies may not intentionally hide prebiotic content, Alfano believes most consumers value taste over potential health benefits.
