Remains of Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship discovered after 62 years

The wreckage of the Quest, the vessel used by Sir Ernest Shackleton, was found on June 9, 2023, by an international team from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

“Finding Quest is one of the final chapters in the extraordinary story of Sir Ernest Shackleton...[whose] death is the only one to have taken place on any of the ships under his direct command.” —Expedition leader.

The Quest was located 2.5 km from its last reported position, at a depth of 390 meters, off the coast of Canada's Labrador and Newfoundland province. The ship sank in 1922 while en route to Antarctica, marking the end of the "Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration."

Shackleton's Legacy

Shackleton died aboard the* Quest* at 47. The ship's journey continued, participating in the 1930-1931 British Arctic Air Route Expedition and serving in WWII with the Royal Canadian Navy.

In 2022, Endurance, Shackleton's 1915 vessel, was found 10,000 feet deep in the Weddell Sea. Shackleton rescued all 27 men after Endurance sank, trapped in ice.
