singer and TV host Johnny Canales, credited with boosting the career of Selena Quintanilla, has died aged 77. A statement from his family celebrated his "spirit" and his influence on Tejano culture. Canales had a stroke in 2008 and his health declined further in May, sparking concern from fans.

The Johnny Canales Show ran for decades, featuring artists like La Mafia and La Sombra de Chicago and drew audiences of 6,000, broadcasting in 23 countries. A performance venue, JohnnyLand, was opened in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1994.

Canales is best known for his role in the rise of Selena, the "queen of Tejano music". She appeared on his show in 1986, and returned throughout her career, performing there for the last time in 1994, a year before her tragic death.

Canales is survived by his wife, Nora, and daughters, Seleste and Miroslava.
