Missouri Girl, 8, Dies on Flight Despite Rapid Response

Officials in Illinois are investigating the tragic death of 8-year-old Sydney Weston from Carl Junction, Missouri, who suffered a medical emergency on a SkyWest Airlines flight, forcing an emergency landing in Peoria, Illinois.

Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins:

"The tragedy took place on a flight from Joplin, Missouri to Chicago. Upon receiving notice of the girl's condition, the plane made an emergency landing at the Peoria International Airport."

Peoria County Coroner:

"The child suddenly became ill and unresponsive during the flight... Upon landing, she was not breathing and had no pulse... Life-saving measures were immediately implemented by officials, but the girl ultimately passed away. An autopsy will determine the official cause of death. Our thoughts are with the family."
