South Florida Residents Battle Floods, Tornado as More Rain Expected 

'Life-threatening floods' prompt road closures, evacuations, and flight disruptions.

A slow-moving low-pressure system brought heavy rain and thunderstorms to South Florida, leading to significant flooding and a tornado. 

"This is a life-threatening situation. Seek higher ground now!" — National Weather Service

  • A tornado touched down with peak winds of 85-95 mph, moving from Hobe Sound to Jupiter Island, then into the Atlantic.
  • Power poles and trees were toppled, homes damaged.
  • Major roads, including Interstate 95, closed due to flooding.
  • Miami-Dade and Broward counties were hit by further hazardous storms Thursday, causing more flooding and water damage.
  • The flood watch remains in effect through Friday evening as rain continues.
