Potential Tropical Cyclone One Strengthens as it Approaches Gulf of Texas

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is expecting to name the tropical disturbance currently in the Gulf of Texas as "Alberto," the first tropical storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

A generally westward motion with an increase in forward speed is expected during the next day or so, and the system is forecast to reach the coast of northeastern Mexico by late tonight or early Thursday.

Latest Updates:

  • NHC issues a tropical storm warning for the Texas coast from San Luis Pass to the mouth of the Rio Grande.
  • The warning also includes the northeastern coast of Mexico south of the mouth of the Rio Grande to Puerto de Altamira.
  • Maximum sustained winds are at 40 mph, just meeting the threshold for a tropical storm.
  • The system is large, with tropical-storm-force winds extending 415 miles outward from the center.
  • It is expected to make landfall between late Wednesday and early Thursday morning.
  • Heavy rainfall of 5-10 inches, with maximum totals of 15 inches, is expected across northeast Mexico and South Texas.
