Oakland Police Confirm Several Injured in Juneteenth Celebration Shooting

Several people were injured in a shooting during a Juneteenth celebration in Oakland, California, on Wednesday night. The shooting occurred around 8:45 p.m. after a fight broke out, according to the Oakland Police Department.

"We were all celebrating, there were sideshows, [a] couple of fights that were going on - next thing we know, we all thought we heard fireworks, so we ran from the direction." - Witness Tamia Robinson to ABC7 News

Approximately 5,000 people attended the celebrations, which the police described in a press release as "peaceful until around 8:15 p.m. when an illegal sideshow involving vehicles and motorbikes occurred..." The release also stated that "[t]he events were not sanctioned gatherings."

As the crowd began to gather after the fight, multiple shots were fired, injuring several individuals. Some victims were transported to hospitals by medical personnel, while others were taken in private vehicles. The exact number of victims is still unknown and under investigation.

Multiple officers also sustained minor injuries as they guided the crowds to safety, according to the release. They were punched and pushed. The police are investigating the incident and have asked anyone with information to contact the OPD Felony Assault Unit and send any relevant photos or videos to cidvideos@oaklandca.gov.
