People love their classics, especially when they don't cost a fortune. This may explain why free streaming service Tubi beat out major subscription-based competitors like Disney+, Max, and Peacock in viewership last month.

Tubi Outperforms Competition

"Tubi had its best month ever in May", with an impressive average of one million viewers, according to AVclub. Disney+ trailed closely behind with 969,000 viewers. Tubi also surpassed other big names like Peacock, Max, and Paramount+. Impressively, it also beat out other free streaming platforms like Roku and Pluto TV. The only free ad-supported platform with more viewers than Tubi is YouTube.

Who Owns Tubi?

Tubi, founded in San Francisco in 2017, was acquired by Fox in 2020 for a cool $440 million. The service now boasts over 50,000 titles, catering to a diverse audience.

63% of Tubi users have never had a cable package, the so-called "cord-nevers." Nearly half of its user base is multicultural, encompassing Black, Latino, Asian, and LGBTQ+ audiences.

Why Are Users Flocking to Tubi?

As streaming subscription prices soar, Tubi offers a no-cost alternative for those looking to save money.

"44% of streaming users indicated that Disney+ would be the first service they'd drop if prices increased."

Monthly costs for popular streaming apps can range from $6.99 (AppleTV) to a hefty $17.99 (Hulu).

How Many Users Are on Tubi?

While Netflix still reigns supreme with 247 million subscribers, followed by Amazon Prime (200 million) and Disney+ (150 million), Tubi holds its own with over 64 million monthly active users, per Nielsen.

To put this into perspective, Paramount+ has 63.4 million subscribers, and Hulu has 48.5 million.
