Police search for man who abandoned premature baby in Texas

Harris County, Texas — Authorities are searching for a man who abandoned a premature baby girl on a walking trail, leaving her with a couple who found the child.

Sgt. Juan Garcia of the Harris County Sheriff's Child Abuse Unit said:

"Right now, we have an unknown male who dropped the child off at the location... We are seeking info about a young Hispanic or White male, slim, fair complexion with black hair, (who) was holding the infant wrapped in a towel. He was wearing a black shirt, possibly gray pants. The male was on foot on the Plantation Lakes walking trail."

The baby still had her placenta attached and was immediately taken to hospital, where she is now stable.

Daniela Fedele, who discovered the baby with her husband, said:

"I noticed two little feet moving and then my husband was right behind me with the dogs, and I yelled to my husband. I'm like, 'oh my god, a baby, a baby.' And then my husband like, 'call 911, call 911' and that's what we did."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (713) 830-3250 or Crime Stoppers of Houston at (713) 222-8477.

Although Texas law allows parents to anonymously drop off babies at designated Safe Havens, this case is still considered abandonment and endangerment. Sgt. Garcia said the child will be "ascertained for any medical issues" and placed in foster care.
