Texas Businesses Try to Ban "The Edgar" Haircut

A haircut known as "The Edgar" has become controversial in Texas, with some businesses attempting to ban the style. The bowl cut is particularly popular among Mexican-American men, but has recently been associated with criminal activity.

The Controversy:

"The growing distrust for the 'Edgar' style stems from an April shooting in San Antonio, where 18-year-old Mikey Valdez, who sported the haircut, was shot and killed by police."

Local Reactions:

Ricky Ortiz, a food truck owner in San Antonio, posted an image on Instagram of a young Hispanic man with the haircut and the words "No Edgars." He faced accusations of racism, to which he responded:

"People accusing me of racism are speaking from a place of ignorance... they don't want to admit that the majority of the kids that are getting these haircuts want to be in a culture influenced by gang affiliation and things like that."

Legal Perspective:

The CROWN Act, a Texas law, prohibits discrimination in schools, housing, and workplaces based on hair textures and styles associated with race. However, the law doesn't explicitly cover customers' hairstyles in businesses. https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Docs/LA/htm/LA.21.htm

The attempted ban on "The Edgar" haircut has sparked debates about racial profiling, gang culture, and the limits of anti-discrimination laws in Texas.
