New England tornado warnings. No padding.

Published June 23, 2024 at 5:38pm by James Powel

Parts of New England were under tornado warnings Sunday, with a risks of 70 mph winds and large hail. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued warnings for several counties in Vermont and New York [#, #, #, #]. A watch warning stated that winds could reach up to 70 mph and hail could be as large as 1.5 inches in diameter [URL].

The NWS also issued a Special Weather Statement for Vermont, warning of severe thunderstorms and lightning [URL]. "Lightning can strike 10 miles from storms," the statement said. "If you can hear thunder, you are at risk."

This wild weather comes after a week of extreme heat and flooding in the US. While temperatures are expected to drop this week, the Northeast will still experience highs in the 90s.

Tornado Watches vs. Warnings:

  • A tornado watch means tornadoes are possible, be prepared and ready to act.
  • A tornado warning means a tornado has been sighted, there is imminent danger, and residents should seek shelter immediately.
