Austin police detain erratic man; he later dies in hospital after causing multi-vehicle collision

Austin, Texas - Last Monday, Austin police detained 35-year-old Jermaine Sims, who was reported to be "acting erratic" at a gas station. Sims then stole a pickup truck and crashed head-on into multiple vehicles on the Interstate 35 frontage road. He was detained by police and transported to the hospital, where he later died. The incident has led to two investigations into Sims' death, which is being treated as an in-custody death.

[...] officers with the Austin Police Department took the man into custody before he was taken to the hospital on June 17 [...] It's not clear whether officers physically detained Sims nor why the Police Department waited a week to release information about the incident. - Austin Police Department
