Boy, Unresponsive in Shallow Pool, Dies at New Jersey Camp
A lifeguard's worst nightmare. A parent's worst nightmare.
A lifeguard found an unresponsive boy in the shallow pool of a New Jersey day camp on Monday; the child later died in hospital. The incident occurred at the Liberty Lake Day Camp, owned by Andy Pritikin, located in Bordentown, Burlington County.
Pritikin said in a statement:
"We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken... Our thoughts [...] are with our camper's family, friends, and loved ones – and we are respecting their privacy."
The boy was in the pool during a swim period for young campers, and though CPR was performed by staff and first responders, he could not be revived.
Pritikin added:
"We have three registered nurses on staff, 25 lifeguards certified in first aid/CPR/AED, and the Mansfield First Aid Squad located just down the street. Our goal is always to do everything possible [...] to protect the campers and staff in our care."
Counseling is being offered to campers by a licensed clinical social worker.
