Body of Diem Le Nguyen Found After Hike for Charity

Search and rescue teams found the body of a woman, believed to be 50-year-old Diem Le Nguyen, quarter-of-a-mile from a nearby street on Monday. Nguyen went missing on Sunday while on a group hike for charity.

Search crews found the body of a woman, believed to be Diem Le Nguyen, a 50-year-old mother of three, on Monday morning, according to San Diego Police Department (SDPD). Nguyen went missing on Sunday while participating in a group hike with around 100 people to raise funds for the "Build a School Foundation."

"She nearly made it out," said Lt. Daniel Meyer, SDPD's public information officer, in a press conference Monday. Meyer detailed the timeline of events:

  • 8 a.m.: Nguyen started hiking with the large group, including family and friends. Halfway up, the group turned back, but Nguyen continued to the peak.
  • 10:08 a.m. : Nguyen called her family, distressed, saying she was "very hot and needed water."
  • 11:30 a.m. : SFPD received the missing person report and classified Nguyen as at-risk due to the environment, heat, and her distress call.

The search continued until Monday when a body was found.

William Dom, Nguyen's family member, expressed shock at her death, telling NBC 7: "She is very careful. I am surprised she ran out of water... She always prepares well."

The "Build a School Foundation" expressed their sadness in a Facebook post: "Our hearts are sadden with Diem's family and loved ones."
