Illinois Village Issues Mandatory Evacuation Order After Train Derailment

MATTESON, Ill. — Village officials in Matteson, Illinois, are urging residents to evacuate immediately following a train derailment on Thursday involving a Canadian National Railway Company train car. The incident, which occurred about 30 miles from Chicago, has led to a mandatory long-term evacuation for specific areas.

A spokesperson for the village, Sean Howard, stated that:

"We’re going freight car to freight car to make sure"

In a Facebook post on Thursday afternoon, officials announced:

"a mandatory evacuation order is in place for specific areas due to a large-scale train event. Residents are urged to plan for an extended time away and to take any necessary medication and supplies with them. Residents of Park Forest and Richton Park are advised to contact their local departments for instructions."

No injuries have been reported at this time, but officials are examining a leaking train car.
