Volkswagen Recalls 270,000 SUVs for Airbag Sensor Fault

  • Volkswagen Group of America is recalling over 270,000 SUV models due to potential faults in the passenger airbag sensor system.
  • Affected models: 2021-2024 Volkswagen Atlas and 2020-2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.
  • Issue: Faulty wiring in the passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may deactivate the front passenger airbag, even when the seat is occupied. This could prevent the airbag from deploying and increase the risk of injury during a crash.
  • Fix: Volkswagen dealers will replace the PODS sensor mat and wiring harness, free of charge.
  • Recall number: 69PZ.
  • More info: Visit the NHTSA recall page, or check the USA TODAY recall database for updates.

Statement from Volkswagen:

"Some vehicles may experience faulty wiring in the passenger occupant detection system (PODS), resulting in the deactivation of the front passenger airbag even when the seat is occupied. This fault could lead to the vehicles failing to sense the presence of a passenger and prevent the airbag from deploying, increasing the risk of injury during a crash."
