US presidential debate: key moments you might have missed

Last night's presidential debate between current President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump was filled with notable moments, including personal insults and discussions of hot-button issues. Here are some of the stand-out moments:

Golf bragging rights

“He challenged me to a golf match,” Trump said of Biden. “He can’t hit a ball 50 yards.”

“I’d be happy to have a driving contest with him," Biden responded. "I’m happy to play golf with you if you carry your own bag. Think you can do it?”

"That’s the biggest lie...of all,” Trump shot back.

The 'Biden freeze'

Social media lit up with posts and memes about President Biden seemingly stumbling over his words during a discussion of healthcare, the economy, and high debt levels under Trump.

Age and competency

"I spent half my career being criticized for being the youngest person in politics...now I'm the oldest. This guy is three years younger and a lot less competent," Biden said.

"I took two cognitive tests, I aced them both...I'd like to see him take just one," Trump responded.

'Losers and suckers'

Biden: "I went to the WWI cemetery he refused to go to...He said 'I don't want to go in there because they're a bunch of losers and suckers.' My son was not a loser, he was not a sucker, you're the sucker, you're the loser."

This refers to an Atlantic report from 2020, which Trump has denied, claiming veterans and soldiers "can't stand" Biden but like him.

Trump denies Jan. 6 involvement

When confronted about the January 6 insurrection, Trump denied any wrongdoing:

“Well I didn't say that to anybody, I said peacefully and patriotically," Trump said.

Biden insisted that Trump encouraged the rioters and referred to his previous statements about pardoning them.

A wild ride, with potential implications for the future of US politics and global relations. Memes aside, the American public and the world are left to ponder the implications of these "stand-out moments."
