Shark Attack Off Amelia Island

Nassau County, FL — Authorities reported that a man in his 40s sustained a severe shark bite to his forearm and was hospitalized in critical condition. This incident marks the ninth confirmed unprovoked shark attack in the county since 1882.

A man in his 40s is in critical condition after a shark attack off Amelia Island, Nassau County, on Friday. This is the latest in a string of recent shark incidents in Florida.

The man, who has not been identified, sustained a severe bite to his right arm, according to Sheriff Bill Leeper. Deputies applied a tourniquet and airlifted the victim to a local hospital, where he is expected to recover.

This attack is the ninth confirmed unprovoked incident in Nassau County since 1882. Nearby counties, Duval and St. Johns, have seen significantly more attacks with 46 and 45 respectively. Volusia County leads the state with 351 reported shark attacks.

"A deputy applied a tourniquet to the injured man's arm and piloted the man's boat to Dee Dee Bartels boat ramp..." – Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper

Just last month, on June 7, three people were injured in back-to-back attacks off Florida's Gulf Coast. One woman lost her arm and suffered severe trauma, while two teenagers sustained significant injuries.

With summer in full swing, it's important to be mindful of shark activity and take precautions when swimming in Florida waters.
