Hurricane Beryl Bears Down on the Windward Islands

As of Monday morning, Hurricane Beryl is hurtling towards the Windward Islands with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, a Category 3 hurricane. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns of life-threatening conditions including storm surges as the hurricane moves west at 20 mph.

"Fluctuations in strength are likely during the next day or so, but Beryl is expected to remain an extremely dangerous major hurricane as its core moves through the Windward Islands into the eastern Caribbean...Some weakening is expected in the central Caribbean by midweek, though Beryl is forecast to remain a hurricane."

Beryl, which weakened slightly overnight from a Category 4, is expected to move across the Windward Islands early Monday and continue through the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea by Wednesday. The NHC forecasts some weakening by midweek, but Beryl is predicted to remain a powerful hurricane.

Tropical Storm Chris Makes Landfall

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Chris made landfall in Mexico early Monday, bringing heavy rain and flooding. Chris is moving west at 12 mph and is expected to dissipate by the end of the day as it moves further inland.

Invest 96L

The NHC also tracks Invest 96L, an area of low pressure about 1000 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. It is likely to become a tropical depression by midweek as it moves westward.
