Hurricane Beryl to Make Landfall, Threatens to Strengthen Before Reaching Mexico

A Category 4 Hurricane Beryl is expected to make landfall on the Windward Islands, bringing potentially catastrophic winds, before moving through the eastern Caribbean toward Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

"Potentially catastrophic wind damage is expected where the core of Beryl moves through portions of the Windward Islands." - NWS forecaster Eric Blake.

As of 7 a.m., updates include:

  • Beryl remains a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 130 mph.
  • The system rapidly intensified due to record-warm ocean temperatures, gaining 95 mph within 42.5 hours.
  • This is the earliest hurricane on record to reach Category 4 status east of the Lesser Antilles in June.
  • It is unlikely to directly impact the U.S., but a northward track toward the Gulf Coast cannot be ruled out.
