Lakes this summer: Beware hidden dangers.

Summer fun at the lake comes with risks. These US lakes are beautiful but dangerous, and the EPA warns of hidden water hazards.

As Americans gear up for Fourth of July celebrations, a sobering reminder about the dangers lurking in popular summer spots: our lakes.

Drownings on the rise

So far in 2024, there have been 28 deaths at the Great Lakes, with Lake Michigan seeing 10 fatalities. In 2023, the number of deaths was 85; Lake Michigan again topped the list with 41.

Other deadly lakes

Lake Lanier in Georgia has seen its fair share of tragedy, with 216 people dying between 1994 and 2022, and 13 more in 2023.

CDC and EPA warnings

The CDC reports over 4,500 people drowned annually from 2020-2022. The EPA warns lake-goers to be aware of local water regulations and offers the following advice:

  • Avoid contact with farm animals
  • Don't drink untreated water
  • Don't swim if you have open wounds
  • Keep pets away from water with green scum
  • Shower after swimming
  • Avoid swimming for three days after rainfall
  • Don't swim if sick, especially with gastrointestinal issues
