Sherri Papini Speaks: Hoax Kidnapping, Jail Time, and a Tell-All Docu-Series

Sherri Papini, who made national headlines with her alleged kidnapping hoax, will soon tell her side of the story in a multi-part documentary on Investigation Discovery (ID).

On November 2, 2016, Papini disappeared from her Mountain Gate, California neighborhood while running. After a three-week exhaustive search, she was found on the side of a road in Yolo County, bruised, chained, and with a brand on her shoulder. Papini told authorities she was abducted at gunpoint by two Hispanic women.

"Sherri Papini drew worldwide attention when she went missing and then again, when she returned...While many perspectives have been told, there is one point of view that the world hasn’t heard, and that is from Sherri herself." Jason Sarlanis, President of ID

Investigators later determined her claims were fabricated, believing she was staying with a former boyfriend in Costa Mesa, self-inflicting injuries to support her story.

Papini was arrested in March 2022 and charged with mail fraud and false statements, ultimately signing a plea deal and being sentenced to 18 months in prison. She was released in October 2023.

During her deception, Papini applied to the California Victim's Compensation Board, receiving over $30,000 in assistance. Authorities noted her lack of remorse and the impact of her lies, which led to a financial restitution order of $309,902 to affected agencies.

The docuseries, scheduled for 2025, promises archival footage, legal documents, and insights from those close to Papini, offering a new perspective on the case.
