Police release body cam footage of officers killing 13-year-old refugee

Utica, New York: On Friday night, 13-year-old Nyah Mway was fatally shot by police officer Patrick Husnay during a foot chase. The Utica Police Department claim Mway brandished what appeared to be a handgun, later identified as a pellet gun. The shooting has sparked outrage in Utica, particularly within the city's Karen immigrant community, an ethnic minority group from Southeast Asia.

"The police officers need to be investigated and held accountable for their actions."

On Sunday, the Utica Police Department released body camera footage and photos of the incident, which show Mway running from officers Husnay and Bryce Patterson, before being tackled to the ground. In the footage, officers can be heard yelling "He's got a gun," and a single shot is fired, striking Mway.

Nyah Mway was a refugee from Myanmar, and a recent graduate of Donovan Middle School. On Saturday, the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations announced an investigation into his death, as required by state law for all officer-involved shootings. The Utica Police Department's Professional Standards Unit is also conducting an internal investigation.
