Supreme Court Rejects Death Row Inmate Rodney Reed's Plea to Review Claim of Withheld Evidence

The U.S. Supreme Court has denied death row inmate Rodney Reed's request to review his claim of withheld evidence, upholding the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals' decision.

"The ruling does not end Reed's bid for freedom, as the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in April that his request for further DNA testing in the Stites murder case could be considered."

The Court turned down Reed's plea to review the alleged suppression of evidence by prosecutors during his 1998 trial for the murder of Stacey Stites. The rejection upholds the Texas appeals court ruling, which stated that new witness testimony would not have changed the original trial outcome.

Reed was convicted and sentenced to death for the 1996 strangulation murder of Stacey Stites, her body was found with Reed's sperm inside her. His lawyers argue for DNA testing on potential crime scene evidence touched by the killer, but prosecutors claim contamination.
